Lee's 20 point night leads the Pirates to victory

Corinth Holders @ Smithfield-Selma

The Pirates stepped back on the hardwood following a week layoff to face county foe, Smithfield-Selma (8-11, 2-3 Two Rivers 3A). The Pirates (6-11, 4-2 Two Rivers 3A) won this 2nd meeting between the schools, 62-58. Seniors DeMorris Lee (20 points, 12 in the first half) and Brian Frazier (17 points, 6/7 from the free throw line) combined for 37 points to help the Pirates down the Spartans. Smithfield-Selma was led by senior Josh Raiford, who had 19. Raiford was in foul trouble all night. 4 fouls were called on the senior, including his fifth and final foul coming in crunch time where Corinth Holders finished the game strong, going 7 of 8 from the free throw line in the final frame. Sophomore Anthony Council also chipped in 12 points and senior Rashad Potts had 10. A 24 point fourth quarter had the Spartan faithful on edge at a possible victory as TJ Altman drained three big triples in the final 30 seconds of the contest to bring his scoring total to 13 for the Spartans but that just wasn't enough to trump Corinth's foul shooting as they shot 65% from the line on the evening. The Pirates locked up a big Two Rivers 3A conference victory tonight to gain sole possession of second place in the conference. The Pirates have two big conference games coming this week that will tell a whole lot about the heart of this team. Tuesday, Two Rivers 3A leader, Triton, comes to Wendell to face the Pirates as Corinth Holders looks to avenge their 70-50 loss to the Hawks that they took in Erwin Jan. 5. After one game in Wendell, the Pirates will hit the road once more and head down to Lillington to face Western Harnett who beat the Pirates in Wendell 75-59 on Jan. 11.
